Studio Trousseau



As the owner of Studio Trousseau in Alameda,
California, Karen Tierney combines her extensive
experience as a design professional, talent for sewingboth vintage and contemporary clothing, knowledge ofhistoric fashions, and her interest in restoring, preserving, and creating heirloom pieces.

Locally, Karen has built costumes for the Alameda
Civic Ballet and acts as the Wardrobe Manager for theyearly production of the Nutcracker. She has spent a decade studying and performing historic dance with dance historian Richard Powers at Stanford University, which led her to craft historically accurate costumes for performances in Paris, Prague, St. Petersburg, Dublin, Ireland and the U.S. As dancing member of the Victorian and Ragtime ballroom dance exhibition group, Danse Libre, Karen also acted as the historic costume adviser.

In 2006, Karen was responsible for the restoration of
vintage garments for Lacis, Museum of Lace and
Textiles' store and historic fashion exhibit in Berkeley. In 2004, Karen exhibited gowns ranging from 1805-1939 for the African American Museum in Oakland. She was also invited to show her work in the 1997 show of Historic Fashion of the 19th Century, in Paris.



Karen's experience is not limited to fashion and
costume design. Her resume includes a life time of
working as an award winning graphic designer, Creative Director for Adobe Systems in San Jose, and professor of branding and typography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She has also guest lectured on fashions of the 19th century at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco and the Universidade Anhembi Morumbi in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

At Studio Trousseau, Karen practices the philosophy
that clothing isn't simply what one wears; rather, it is part of a complete communicative package that includes hairstyle, jewelry, footwear, accessories and much more. Karen can offer guidance in creating a complete look & feel for any occasion or special event.
